In a sign of Japan's increasing need for foreign labor, the Cabinet has approved an expansion of the types of work for which long-term residency is allowed. The possibility of staying in the country permanently is a welcome development for foreign workers who meet the requirements.

Cabinet ministers on Friday widened Category 2 residence status to allow more workers to extend their stay in the country indefinitely and bring family members to Japan.
