Traditionally, outplacement services—programs designed to assist departing employees in transitioning to new employment—have been reserved for large enterprises. The costs and complexities of these programs have previously placed them out of reach for small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs). Larger companies, on the other hand, have the resources to implement these programs—and it’s a good thing, since outplacement has always been imperative to protecting their employer brand.

Instability seems to be top of mind for many business leaders, with organizations are being pushed to make decisions they hoped they’d never face. Restructuring, shifting priorities, and even reducing parts of the workforce have become more common as companies try to protect their long-term viability. And while no layoff is ever simple, how a company handles that moment still matters.

The first week of onboarding often revolves around compliance checklists, training modules, and HR paperwork. Those are necessary, but with pre-boarding, a lot of that can be checked off before their first day, and these tasks are not what makes new hires feel welcome.

Practicing conversations with AI can reduce anxiety and help employees build communication skills. However, it’s not a solution to a widespread culture problem. If a large portion of employees are feeling anxious about confronting colleagues, it may be time to revisit your company values and culture.

If you’re worried about competing with big corporations for international hires, remote work is how you can level the playing field. Across the globe, people strongly prefer fully remote work, but only about a third of all workers are fully remote.

Employee engagement and retention are at a crossroads. Only 26% of employees are engaged in their work, and less than half express a commitment to staying with their current employer. Even more concerning, a mere 25% envision a long-term career within their organization. The topline finding is stark: just one in four employees feel genuinely appreciated, while nearly two-thirds would consider returning to a former workplace if it meant feeling valued again.

As the needs of organizations everywhere become more complex, the way we manage employees has to evolve, too. While new technology has helped automate fundamental processes like payroll and hiring, we’ve just scratched the surface of what can be simplified and streamlined. As developments like AI shift from speculative and experimental to practical and functional, employers must determine how — not if — they’ll implement the tech.

Checklists are useful, they often miss the human side of the transition, and all the feelings that go with assuming a leadership role at a new company. You’re not just inheriting a set of processes—you’re stepping into people’s real-life experiences with those processes. And how you engage with that reality will set the tone for how you partner with and influence others to drive impact for your organization.

AI is accelerating change at a pace many workers can’t yet see, but feel all the same. While only 12% of career transition candidates in our programs cite AI as the reason for their layoffs, nearly half of business leaders say they’ve already reduced headcount because of it. That mismatch points to a deeper challenge: Organizations are evolving faster than people are being prepared to adapt.
