  • Japan wants 85 percent of male workers to take paternity leave. But fathers are too afraid to take it

    Japanese authorities have widely promoted the term in the past decade to combat the country’s notoriously long working hours that have not only deprived workaholic fathers of family time and stay-home mothers of careers, but have helped drive the birth rate to one of the lowest in the world.

    To seize the “last chance to reverse” the situation, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida last week unveiled a raft of policies, including boosts to child support and a pledge to lift the number of male workers taking paternity leave from the current 14 percent to 50 percent by 2025, and 85 percent by 2030.

  • Japan's growing part-time employment weighs on wages

    Part-time employment has been increasing in Japan over the last quarter century, a trend hindering strong growth in wages and prompting calls for legislative action to improve the treatment of those workers.

    The country had 21.01 million non-regular workers in 2022, up roughly 260,000 from a year earlier, according to the government's labor force survey, with regular employees increasing just 10,000 to 35.88 million.

  • Japan’s real wages experiences biggest drop in almost a decade

    Despite the government’s efforts to push for higher pay, real wages for employees has continued to fall because of inflation.


    Inflation is continuing to outpace wage gains in Japan, with real cash earnings for employees falling by 4.1% from January 2022, marking a 10th consecutive month of decline, reported Japan’s Labour Ministry.

  • Job fair organized for Japanese tourism industry to resolve worker shortage

    Japan's tourism industry is struggling with a shortage of workers as demand for travel surges in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government organized an emergency job fair in a bid to help companies affected.

    More than 30 businesses, including bus companies and hotel operators, sent recruiters to the fair on Wednesday.

  • Japan's job availability down in Jan. for 1st time in over 2 years

    Japan's job availability ratio fell in January for the first time in over two years, as more people sought jobs with better working conditions amid an economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, government data showed Friday.

    The job-to-applicant ratio dropped 0.01 point from the previous month to 1.35, marking the first decline since August 2020, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said. The ratio means there were 135 job openings for every 100 job seekers.

  • Job-hunting season begins in Japan for 2024 graduates

    Japanese companies kicked off job seminars Wednesday for university students graduating in spring 2024. The annual job-hunting season arrives amid labor shortages that reflect the normalization of economic activities after a slump caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

    About 520 companies are set to take part in one three-day seminar through Friday at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center, which is expected to attract around 12,000 students.

  • Japan lacking dairy farmers as cost of feed rises

    The number of dairy farmers in Japan declined 6.5% to 11,202 in December from a year before, the Japan Dairy Council said Friday.

    The drop came amid the surging cost of feed, which is making life even harder for farmers weighed down by weak demand and a lack of successors to take over their farms. Feed accounts for half of dairy farmers’ production costs.

  • Japan hopes to attract highly skilled professionals with new residency program

    The Japanese government will launch a new residency program in a bid to attract talented professionals from other countries. Qualified foreign nationals would be given preferential immigration treatment.

    A new special category for highly skilled professionals would include foreign researchers and engineers with an annual income of at least 20 million yen, or around 150,000 dollars, and a master's degree or more than 10 years of work experience.
