  • IBM Japan tops survey on companies with active female employment

    According to a survey on “Companies with Active Female Employment,” conducted by Nikkei WOMAN, IBM Japan ranked No. 1 again for the third year in a row. Shiseido ranked No. 2, followed by Daiichi-Seimei at No. 3 and Novartis Pharma KK.

  • Sharp reportedly axes 5,000 employees, shifts focus to smartphone displays

    Sharp will reportedly be laying off 5,000 employees as part of a three-year recovery plan to turn the company around. According to The Asahi Shimbun, the number of directors and advisory positions will be cut in half, and the number of employees at Sharp’s main office in Osaka, Japan will be reduced by 50%. Additional layoffs are also expected in China and Malaysia. In an effort to increase profits, the company will be revising its focus to producing smartphone displays, large-sized HDTV sets and 4K TVs. Sharp will reportedly announce its three-year recovery plan next Tuesday.

  • Yahoo! Japan to offer employees one-year sabbaticals

    Yahoo! Japan President Manabu Miyasaka announced at a recent press conference that the company would introduce a new system by the end of the current fiscal year which allows employees to take up to one year off from their jobs. The system, which is based on the concept of sabbaticals, allows employees to spend up to one year freely pursing whatever they desire, albeit without pay. Though fairly common in the West, offering such a system of leave is very rare for a Japanese company.

  • Japan's jobless rate drops

    Japan's unemployment rate dropped 0.2 percent to 4.1 percent in March from 4.3 percent in February, said Japan's internal affairs ministry Tuesday in a preliminary report.

  • Gov't plans to increase number of foreign English teachers to 10,000

    An advisory panel to the Education Ministry has recommended to the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) that Japan increases the number of foreign English teachers at schools to 10,000 from the current 4,360 by reviving the JET program.

  • Firms vexed on older workers

    According to the survey on the revised Law for the Stabilization of Employment of Elderly People, which was put into force this month, many companies have taken measures to reduce labour costs, such as making large cuts in salaries of employees aged between 60 and 65 compared with those approaching retirement. Some companies have started to curb new hires and cut salaries of employees aged under 60.
