  • Wages rise for the first time in three months in Japan

    According to figures released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare on Tuesday, nominal average monthly cash earnings per regular employee in Japan rose 1.1% year-on-year to Y271,621 in May. Overtime pay fell 3.2% in May, according to the data.

    Base wages fell 0.4% in May, for the fifth straight month with a year-on-yeah drop.

  • No pay rises for a third of Japanese professionals in 2011

    OSAKA - Despite Asia offering the highest proportion of pay rises globally in 2011, 27% of professionals working across Japan did not receive a salary increase this year, according to a global survey of more than 3,200 professionals released by recruitment consultancy Robert Walters on Wednesday.

  • Toyota hiring 3,000 to 4,000 temp workers in Japan

    TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp said Tuesday it will hire 3,000 to 4,000 temporary workers in Japan to be ready for a recovery in vehicle production as automakers bounce back from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

      A total of 330 local government employees in Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures were killed or went missing while on duty in the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, according to an investigation by The Yomiuri Shimbun.

      1. Compensation bill aims to help TEPCO pay victims

        TEPCO began in late April paying preliminary compensation to victims of the nuclear disaster. For example, up to 1 million yen is paid to households who evacuated due to the nuclear crisis, and as of late May, up to 2.5 million yen can be paid to people in agriculture, forestry and fisheries businesses affected by the incident.
