Managing an employee’s performance is never simple, but managing an employee through a performance improvement plan (PIP) to disciplinary action is particularly complex. As a first step, an employer will often consider nondisciplinary measures, such as additional training or targeted coaching sessions, when addressing poor performance. However, if performance continues to be lacking, the PIP is a valuable tool that sets a framework for improving an employee’s performance or, alternatively, for disciplinary consequences – up to and including termination.
