    Toshiba Corp.will halve the number of workers in its television operations outside Japan to 3,000 as it outsources more production. As much as 70 percent of the company’s TV output will come from other manufacturers by business 2014, Toshiba said in a statement Monday.

    The success rate of women has soared after eliminating tests on general knowledge and switching to screening methods based on applications and essays. The results show that women are better than men at promoting themselves. But, officials of both the prefectural and municipal governments said: “Ideally there should be an equal ratio of men and women in the workplace and such a large imbalance was unexpected. We will study the test changes to clarify if the test was biased toward women.”

    A 28-year-old woman who was fired for allegedly pocketing prizes that were meant for readers is suing her former employer, Tokyo-based Akita Publishing Co., for 3.3 million yen (approx. $33,200) in compensation. The woman claims she was fired because she dared to point out that the manga company was lying about the prizes they were giving away.

    The average hourly wage for dispatch workers rose to ¥1,351 last year from ¥1,290 in 2008, a Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry survey showed Thursday. The survey found that the average wage per hour came to ¥1,495 for male workers and ¥1,236 for female employees as of Oct. 1.
