In a historically tight labor market, your growing enterprise needs every advantage possible to attract and retain top talent. The self-service revolution has redefined the consumer experience, and the modern employee is well acquainted with the convenience and access it provides. Relying on a paper-based or otherwise cumbersome HR system not only frustrates your employees — it pulls the velocity of your business to a crawl. Likewise, the efficiency and accuracy you gain by putting the power of HR data in your employees’ hands is exponential.

Several states have already passed laws that direct employers as to how and when they must disclose pay ranges (or other information) to either job applicants or current employees. The requirements vary by state, with some states requiring more transparency than others, particularly for companies that operate nationwide. The approach to pay range disclosure is likely to accommodate the most stringent requirements because we anticipate that those requirements will become more widespread.

Over the last few years, I have had countless conversations with business and people leaders on the topic of skills. In response to the ever-increasing pace of change, more and more organisations are turning towards skill-based approaches to managing talent. The common challenge these organisations are solving for is how to effectively source, deploy, and develop talent in a future-fit way.

While the concept of “skill-based organisations” may be the newest workplace buzzword, few organisations have truly succeeded in adopting this new operating model around work. Shifting to a skillbased approach is a significant transformation for a workforce to undergo.

It’s too convenient, in these tumultuous times, to chalk up almost any shift in the way we live and work to the after effects of COVID-19. While it’s clear that this historic pandemic prompted many changes, a number of trends were already in motion, especially in the employment world. 2023 will see many of these trends reach their full effect.

Of particular note is a fundamental restructuring of the employer/employee relationship. For workers, COVID only accelerated their passion—and eventually their collective demand—for their working lives to be placed in a larger context.

The world of work has undergone tremendous change over the last three years — a change that has profoundly impacted workers. The Covid-19 pandemic, followed by the Great Resignation, and ongoing global conflicts are just a few forces affecting hundreds of millions of American workers’ livelihoods.

Organizations with hourly or shift‑based workers are facing unprecedented challenges, as well. Market conditions, such as the ongoing labor shortage, have impacted the finding and retaining of qualified shift workers. Yet, it’s clear that organizations that understand the needs of their workers and prioritize job satisfaction become employers of choice.

There’s no shortage of rapid change in this new era of the employee, and compensation is no exception. Since 2020, employees have had to navigate the financial stressors of a pandemic, skyrocketing inflation, and now, news of layoffs at companies known for their employer brand. Beyond recent struggles, millions of millennials are still under piles student loan debt, health care prices continue to increase, and 401(k) plans have, well, seen better days. When you think about the word “quitting,” what comes to mind? A two-week resignation notice? An employee storming off in a flurry of frustration with the contents of their desk stuffed into a box? Or maybe someone who’s at work one day and gone the next?

Quiet quitting isn’t just a buzzword for a mounting wave of poor performance, but a defensive reflex against burnout. Tanner Bergman, a national certified counselor specializing in corporate well-being, describes quiet quitting as “people protecting the limited capacities they have.” In other words, employees want to preserve boundaries, even if it comes at the cost of appearing less effective.

Most employees (77%) who resign reveal in their exit surveys that their employer could have retained them. To entice top employees to stay, companies can adopt a strategy of “rerecruiting” — make a proactive, compelling internal offer now rather than waiting for them to get an offer elsewhere. Companies can do this by following a three-pronged approach: Understand, respond and activate/optimize, using workforce analytics as the driving force to help produce measurable change.

Organizations today are evaluating and expanding their employee well-being initiatives as part of their overall strategy to attract, engage and retain workers. Programs that help employees stay physically, mentally, emotionally and financially healthy are important benefits that reflect an organization’s culture and how much it values its employees. These programs, when carefully selected to appeal to and serve the needs of the workforce, can help enhance morale and productivity, encourage employee retention, and reduce burnout and absenteeism.

Company culture is a shared set of workplace beliefs, values, attitudes, standards, purposes, and behaviors. It reflects both the written and unwritten rules that people in an organization follow. Your organization’s culture is the sum of all that you and your colleagues think, say, and do as you work together.

Having a strong company culture that treats employees right can do a lot more than give you a warm feeling inside.
